Monash Health is seeking an experienced and passionate First Nations Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) to play a key role in improving cancer care experiences and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

 

This is an opportunity to combine your clinical expertise, cultural knowledge and leadership to influence care at both the patient and health-system level. 

 

About the Role 

 

The First Nations CNC provides clinical coordination, advocacy and culturally safe navigation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout their cancer journey — from screening and diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, end-of-life and palliative care. 

 

Working across Monash Health sites and in partnership with patients, families, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), community partners and multidisciplinary teams, you will support patients to access care that meets their cultural, clinical and personal needs. 

 

Working alongside Project Managers and the Weenthunga Health Network, you will also contribute to First Nations governance, service improvement and culturally safe cancer care across the South Metropolitan Integrated Cancer Service (SMICS) catchment. 

 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Providing First Nations-led clinical coordination, advocacy and cancer navigation 

  • Building trusted relationships with patients, families, communities and Elders 

  • Strengthening partnerships between health services and community organisations 

  • Supporting culturally safe transitions between community and acute care 

  • Providing education, mentoring and support to healthcare staff 

  • Promoting cultural humility and culturally responsive practice 

  • Contributing to First Nations-led models of care, governance and service improvement 

  • Supporting strategies that improve access, continuity and cancer outcomes 

 

This is a Part Time (32 hours per fortnight) Fixed Term Opportunity until June 2028. 

 

About You 

 

You are an experienced nurse with a strong commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

 

This role offers the opportunity to influence how cancer services work with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, strengthening cultural safety, self-determination and connections between healthcare services and community. 

 

Your clinical expertise, cultural knowledge and leadership will help shape sustainable approaches to improving cancer care across Monash Health and the broader region. 

 

You will bring: 

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse and a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent, essential 

  • Previous experience working in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health, essential  

  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and social and emotional wellbeing 

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with communities, Elders and health services 

  • Advanced clinical coordination and complex case management skills 

  • Cancer or supportive care nursing experience, highly regarded 

  • Excellent communication, leadership, education and collaboration skills 

  • Experience contributing to clinical practice development, service improvement or change 

 

A postgraduate qualification, or current enrolment, in culturally safe leadership, cancer care or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
