About the Role 
As the registrar you are accountable to your Unit Head/Consultant for the care all the patients in the unit. It is your responsibility to: 

  • Provide safe and high quality person-centred care for patients under your care 

  • Ensure coordination of care for patients in your unit 

  • During normal working hours, be responsible for the immediate clinical care of the patients in the ICU including 

  • Taking of the history from the patient, the patient's relatives or friends, examination of the patient, conduct investigations, liaison with para-clinical departments and appropriate communication with the primary referring specialist. The last is particularly important in the matter of complex, expensive or hazardous procedures. The formulation of a diagnosis and execution of a management plan. 

  • The performance or supervision of those procedures relevant to the management of the patient and in which the Registrar has been adequately trained during after-hours work; 

  • The Registrar will participate in the after-hours roster. The clinical responsibilities will be similar to those during the day. 

  • The Registrar will have to participate in the “stand by on call roster” for night shifts. 

  • In accordance with the guidelines of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, the Registrar may act in a Consultant role during these periods. There will however always be a consultant on-call to provide help or advice during these periods 

  • Clinical responsibilities for patients outside the ICU; 

  • The Registrar will be required to attend the Anaesthetic Recovery room, Medical Emergency Team, the hospital wards and the Emergency Department from time to time to assist in the assessment and immediate management of seriously ill patients. Such attendance will include assessment of the patient for suitability for ICU admission. Such assessment will include communication with the patient's primary caring physician/surgeon 

  • The Registrar will liaise with the Admitting Officer in relation to admission to the ICU of patients referred from outside the hospital 

  • Ensure timely and clear clinical communication including clinical handover with regards to patients under your care 

  • Ensure timely escalation of care related issues to your consultant when required 

  • In your clinical practice demonstrate commitment to quality and safety and Monash Health's “Patient first” initiative 

  • Audit is desirable part of the registrar’s job and we expect registrar to do at least 1 audit activity while working with us. Consultant mentoring for the audit will be provided 

 

About Intensive Care Medicine - Dandenong and Casey  
Monash Health is in the unique position of being able to offer Basic and Advanced Intensive Care Training, including Anaesthetic, Paediatric and General Medicine College requirements. 

Dandenong Intensive Care Unit is a 14 bed unit providing care for more than 1600 patients per annum. It is a Level 2 major metropolitan unit accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for unlimited training in Intensive Care 

Casey Intensive Care Unit is a 12 bed state of the art Intensive Care Unit which opened in February 2020.  The ICU provides care for more than 1200 patients per annum. Casey ICU is accredited for 6 months by CICM. 

With mutual agreements between various training programs, the units are also recognized for requisite components of other specialty training programs. The units have a strong focus on teaching, research and quality indicators, demonstrated by undertaking a variety of activities. Every week there are regular teaching, audits or mortality and morbidity meetings. You will have the opportunity to participate in general ultrasound and point of care echocardiography, tailored to your individual needs. You will be expected to actively participate in these quality assurance and academic activities. 

Monash Health has a strong commitment to Organ, Eye & Tissue Donation. Working outside the walls of the unit, ICU offers support to other departments within Dandenong & Casey Hospitals through its `External Liaison Services'. The units also runs the Code Blue and Medical Emergency Teams (MET) services. 

  

Rotations that might be offered as per individual trainee needs by SOTs: 

  • Anaesthetics 
  • Rural – Bass Coast and LRH. 
  • Medical 
  • Rotations to MMC/VHH 

 

Contract duration: 
We offer 12 month contracts which can be extended by 12 months, upon negotiation.
