Neurosurgery Senior HMO Position 

This position is intended for a suitably qualified individual to contribute to the high quality functioning of the neurosurgery unit at a level between the rotational residents and registrars. 

This will provide an opportunity for consistent experience and development within neurosurgery, with the intention to allow those that wish to pursue a registrar position subsequently to do so from a position of strength. 

Requirements in addition to senior HMO 3+ include: 

  • 6 months of neurosurgery equivalent experience at HMO level 

  • ICU term 

 

About the Role 

  • Lead the junior residents and liaise with registrar body in the provision of excellent and timely care of neurosurgical inpatient 

  • Assist in outpatient clinics 

  • Step up as leave cover for absent registrars including supervised daytime on-call 

  • Participate in operative sessions (per resident roster) 

  • Ensure efficiency and quality control of ward administration (e.g. discharge summaries, referrals for MDT) 

  • Increased responsibility for liaison with nursing and allied health for efficient collaborative care (be the ‘first port of call’) 

  • Organisation and presentation of unit audit activities  

  • Preparation of presentations for teaching/journal club 

  • Participate in a research or quality improvement project under supervision of consultant neurosurgeon including closing audit loop/pilot studies. Initiative in identification and initiation of these will be expected. 

 

We hope that the successful candidate who embraces the opportunities of this position should be optimally placed to proceed to further neurosurgical positions (e.g. unaccredited registrar, in this unit or beyond). 

 

About You:

  • Timely completion of ward tasks 

  • Timely documentation 

  • Demonstrate initiative for structure of daily workflow e.g. organisation of urgent tests, preparation of acute patients for theatre/intervention, ensuring criteria are met for prompt discharge of eligible patients 

  • Prepare minimum one audit meeting per 3 months 

  • Attendance at 2 outpatient and 5 rapid review clinics per month 

  • Participation in minimum 10 major cases per 3 months 

  • Insertion ICP monitor, EVD, lumbar puncture 

  • 2 journal club/teaching sessions per year 

  • One quality improvement project (consultant supervised) 

  • One case report/research project targeted at publication 

Evidence of career progression, e.g. attendance at RACS courses and sitting the GSSE
