About the Role

Commencing February 2025, we are advertising for a 12 month appointment as Advanced Training Registrar in Community Paediatrics at our Pakenham Hub.  A six-month appointment would be considered for the right applicant.  This position is intended to provide responsibility, independence and flexibility for Paediatric training whilst gaining more experience and expertise in Community Child Health. The ATR can expect to be exposed to the full range of outpatient general paediatric conditions with a heavy focus on developmental and behavioural paediatrics. The ATR will develop an understanding of community support agencies and gain experience in helping families navigate the systems in place.

The Pakenham Paediatric clinic provides initial and ongoing care for the children in the Cardinia shire region. The clinic receives referrals from GPs in the region for children with complex behavioural and developmental needs, as well as general paediatric concerns. Common presentations include developmental delay, follow up of premature infants, learning difficulties, behaviour challenges, ADHD, ASD, continence, sleep disorders, growth concerns and chronic medical conditions. The clinic is supervised by a consultant paediatrician with specialist qualifications in Community Child Health and an interest in promoting the health and wellbeing of children in their own community. The clinic functions as part of a multi-disciplinary community health team and patient management frequently involves case conferencing, liaison with schools, childcare centres, kindergartens, early intervention workers and Child Protection agencies.

The ATR will be supervised by the onsite consultant in the clinic. The supervisor will be responsible for ensuring that the ATR receives thorough clinical training in community paediatrics and may also oversee research projects. Supervision involves regular weekly meetings, performance appraisal and completion of college-based requirements if needed. It is anticipated that the ATR will feel confident to undertake an outpatient role in General Paediatrics at a Consultant level following 12 months in this position.

The clinic runs every Monday from 0900-1700 and allows time and flexibility to facilitate a thorough approach to formulating an individualized management plan. The 12-month position allows for longer term follow up of patients with opportunity to have a key role in the coordination of care and shaping of patient outcomes.
