About the Role

Monash Health is offering a two-year position in Advanced Training in Psychotherapy in the area of Trauma-informed and Individual Dynamic Psychotherapies. It is expected that this training will provide a basis for psychologically-informed work in both the private practice and public sectors. A formal learning component is also required to attain this Training Certificate.

The appointments will begin in February 2024 and are intended to accompany the Certificate in Advanced Training. It is expected that the trainee will rotate through private (Langmore) and public hospital positions (Hope / Agile) in conjunction with holding a psychotherapy list.

As well as learning traditional Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for high prevalence disorders, the trainee will be given the opportunity to develop psychodynamically-informed ‘common factors’ psychotherapy skills in psychotherapy for complex developmental trauma; management of referral pathways for such patients and relationships with referrers; group facilitation and teaching skills. Particular attention will be made to facilitating the skills in maintaining a therapeutic alliance over the long term; managing the use of medication in conjunction with psychotherapy; and to developing a sophisticated understanding of the counter-transference strains in psychotherapeutic work, and to consider dynamic forces that exist within groups and organizations. There may also be opportunities to develop DBT skills and lead a reflective group.

The AT in psychotherapies will be provided individual and group supervision, as well as supervision in the designated rotations which will provide patients for short cases of psychotherapy in two of the following modalities as required: cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT); application of family/systems therapy; focal/short-term psychotherapy; group psychotherapy.

Candidates should have completed the clinical part of their Psychotherapy Long Case and entered Stage 3 of training. It will be expected that Stage 3 of Fellowship training will be acquired alongside the Advanced Trainee EPA’s which can be found here:
https://www.ranzcp.org/pre-fellowship/about-the-training-program/certificates-of-advanced-training/psychotherapies.

Prior to commencement, candidates will be required to discuss formal training requirements (see MAPP:  https://www.mindful.org.au/PGrad-Courses/Advanced-Training-in-the-Psychotherapies-(VIC).aspx) with the Director of Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies, Dr Paul Cammell.
