About Monash Gastroenterology 

Monash Gastroenterology is Victoria’s largest gastroenterology unit. We care for 3000 GI inpatients/year, provide 12,000 endoscopic procedures, and see 20,000 outpatients per annum across a range of speciality clinics including general gastroenterology, IBD, hepatobiliary, endoscopy, liver, decompensated liver, NASH, and liver cancer.  

We provide services at Clayton, Dandenong and Casey, with two ward teams (Clayton and Dandenong), three endoscopy units (Clayton, Dandenong and Casey), five outpatient sites, and a 24 hour registrar led but consultant driven GI bleeding roster for Clayton and Dandenong. In addition we offer intestinal ultrasound, fibroscan, and infusion services. The team currently comprises 38 gastroenterologists, 7 accredited Registrars and 5 PhD students and a large clinical trials unit providing ethics, GCP, and research nurse support for commercial drug trials and both clinical and laboratory investigator initiated research.  The Gastroenterology and Hepatology service is coordinated by the head of department, Prof Sally Bell. 

The hepatology group is headed by the deputy head of department, Assoc. Prof Anouk Dev and consists of 12 consultants with specialist hepatology experience, 7 of whom have an MD or PhD and/or postdoctoral work in clinical or translation Hepatology, 5 clinical and trials nurse consultants, 3 clinic administrative assistants and 1 research coordinator responsible for ethics applications and submission. We conduct 47 ambulatory clinics per month including general hepatology, complex liver disease, Liver tumour and fibroscan. We also lead a comprehensive liver tumour multidisciplinary meeting attended by radiology, oncology, hepatobiliary surgery, and radiation oncology. 

The unit has a strong interest in clinical and translational research, including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, fibrosis and cirrhosis, stem cell therapies and exploration of new technologies. Collaboration with our research partners will enable microbiome and addiction medicine research in 2026. Currently, the Gastroenterology unit has an active doctoral research program with 3 IBD research fellows, 2 hepatology fellows, a pancreatic fellow and 2-3 clinical fellows. 

  

About the Role   

We seek a clinical hepatology fellow to join a thriving academic gastroenterology service at Monash Health in Melbourne’s South East. The 1 year job will involve: 

  • Patient assessment and management in consultation with the treating consultant
  • Patient care coordination
  • Intern/HMO support, supervision, feedback and teaching
  • Student interaction and teaching
  • Family member communication, feedback and liaison
  • Extensive interaction with the other health professionals, especially, the nursing and allied health staff
  • Self-management (including time management, accessing education and training and completing college requirements)
  • Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary treating team
  • Demonstrate commitment towards key organisational initiatives
  • Demonstrate compliance with all relevant Monash Health Policies and Procedures 

The post is suited to those in year 3-4 of specialist training in gastroenterology who wish to gain more in-depth hepatology experience including HCC and fibroscan training. Applicants with FRACP and conjoint accreditation will join the paid out-of-hours bleeding rota. 

Funding: Base salary $75,000. Opportunities exist for funded cover endoscopy lists for post FRACP candidates with conjoint accreditation.

Mandatory requirements of the role:
