About the Role

This Transition Year fellow position at Monash Medical Centre and Victorian Heart Hospital has been developed in accordance with the college requirement to allow completion of training and admission to the college of intensive care medicine for trainees registering after 2014. The aim is to introduce consultant activities into the trainee’s experience in a structured manner through supervised practice initially, and progress to minimal supervision and as required supervision, as would be seen for junior consultants. The structured introduction will focus on:

  • Supervised ward rounds
  • On call from home
  • Non-clinical portfolio

About Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) & Victorian Heart Hospital – Intensive Care Units

Monash Medical Centre Intensive Care Unit Environment houses a 26-bed unit operating as two pods run by two teams of multidisciplinary staff including Intensivists, Senior and Junior Registrars, Residents, Physiotherapists, Nursing Staff and Pharmacists. The Unit has a dedicated outreach consultant role Monday to Friday in hours, weekends only 2 consultants, one for each pod with outreach support alternating daily for the 2 days. The unit is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for General Training (Core Intensive Care /C24) as well as fulfilling the CICM requirements for subspecialty exposure to thoracic surgical, Neurology and Neurosurgical Intensive Care. The Monash Medical Centre Intensive Care Unit also provides a state-wide Obstetric Intensive Care Referral service, a Renal / Renal-Pancreas Transplant service and supports a comprehensive range of medical and surgical subspecialties. 

The Victorian Heart Hospital Intensive Care unit is a 16-bed ICU specialising in cardiology/Cardiac surgical ICU. The ICU is currently funded for 6 beds and run by a multidisciplinary staff similar to Monash Medical Centre. Victorian Heart Hospital ICU has a dedicated outreach team and ECMO team 24/7. The unit is affiliated with Monash Medical Centre and accredited by CICM for Cardiac surgical unit.

Monash Health Intensive Care is delighted to have secured funding for a state-of-the-art critical care ultrasound simulator. This is the fully optioned CAE Vimedix package which includes training for transthoracic, trans-oesophageal, pleural, lung and eFAST ultrasound imaging. This new simulator will complement the current excellent and long-standing Monash Health critical care ultrasound education program led by our highly skilled team of sonographer educators. Monash Health Intensive has established a clinical partnership with the Monash University School of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. We developed a first novel critical care lung ultrasound course and the aim is to develop series of courses with a number of intensive care clinical partners, and with Monash University as the credentialing body.

  • Provision of Critical Care US and ECHO within the unit  
  • Combined training program with Sonographers and Intensive Care Specialist with special interest and further qualifications in Critical Care US & ECHO
  • Research 
  • ECMO 
  • Education - Part 1 and 2 CICM preparation 
  • Organ Donation 
  • Infection prevention 
  • Specialty liaison portfolios for Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, Infectious diseases, Anaesthesia, Emergency, and Obstetrics

Patient Exposure

Monash Medical Centre (Clayton Campus):

  • 640-bed acute adult hospital 
  • Over 1600 ICU admissions a year 
  • Over 4500 external emergency responses per year 
  • Neurology / Neurosurgery 
  • Non trauma centre
  • Clot retrieval centre
  • Obstetric ICU
  • Complex high risk obstetric centre 

Victorian Heart Hospital:

  • Up to 206 bed capacity , specialist adult cardiac hospital
  • Around 1000 ICU admissions per year
  • Around 1500 external emergency responses per year 
  • ECMO
  • Tier 3 centre in the Victorian ECMO service 
  • Average 20 ECMO cases / year

About You

To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge: 

  • A medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) with current registration the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APRHA)
  • A current Victorian Working with Children Check Employee (WWCC)
  • Current Drivers Licence 
  • All candidates will require Australian working rights. 
  • Two (2) completed referee reports (see below)
