About Supportive and Palliative Care  

The Supportive and Palliative Care Department of Monash Health is operationally based at McCulloch House at Clayton, and is comprised of the following: 

  • A 16-bed inpatient palliative care unit at McCulloch House and 5-bed unit at Casey Hospital. 

  • A bi-disciplinary (medical and nursing) Palliative Care Consultancy Service across 6 Monash Health Campuses 

  • Outpatient Clinical Services – OncoPain (refractory cancer pain clinic), RAPID (palliative care inreach program), Palliative Care Hospital in the Home collaboration, Supportive Care Clinic, Casey Palliative Care Clinic  

  • A multidisciplinary palliative care team  

  • Research Team (Post-doctoral Fellow, Research Assistants, PhD candidates)   

  • Volunteer program 

The unit has a broad research interest with a focus on translational research. It has produced academic publications in a broad range of areas of interest including refractory cancer pain, ketamine, interventional pain management, end-of-life care, rapid response team and life limiting illness, telemedicine, palliative care and oncology, novel approaches to healthcare delivery tracking, geriatric palliative care, anticipatory medication, and bereavement. 

  

About the Role   

The Palliative Care Fellow will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective person-centred care, provide teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and students.  

It is envisaged that the Fellow would work primarily on key unit research, education or service development projects, along side a clinical component and this can be tailored to interest areas. Our department has a number of ongoing and new research topics that may be of interest and is also open to the Fellows own research proposal. The Fellow will also be part of the Palliative Care weekend/on-call roster and assist in clinical leave cover. There will be opportunities provided to attend palliative medicine education and research meetings, and be part of the extensive Unit and Organisational Governance activities that the SPCU is involved in.  This provides an opportunity to progress and bridge the gap from Registrar to Consultant in a supported and safe environment.  

  

About You 

To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge: 

  • As Fellow of the Unit, in addition to non-clinical activities will have a significant responsibility and may be required to undertake: 

  • Patient assessment and management in consultation with the treating consultant 

  • Support academic, research, education, training & supervision (both undergraduate and postgraduate) 

  • Student interaction and teaching 

  • Family member communication, feedback and liaison 

  • Extensive interaction with the other health professionals, especially, medical, nursing and allied health staff 

  • Self-management (incl. time management, accessing education/training and completing college requirements) 

  • Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary treating team 

  • Demonstrate commitment towards key organisational initiatives 

  • Demonstrate compliance with all relevant Monash Health Policies and Procedures 

  

Mandatory requirements of the role: 

  • Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent  

  • Completed Palliative Medicine Advanced Training requirements or due to complete in next 12 months 

  • All candidates will require Australian working rights 

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) 

  • Employee Working with Children's Check  

  • Current Drivers Licence
