About General Medicine

Monash Health General Medicine is a busy department that delivers a vast volume of clinical services in inpatient and ambulatory settings, with inpatient activity at three major hospital campuses namely Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, and Monash Medical Centre. The General Medicine department fosters strong partnerships with every other medical department as well as a range of external stakeholders, in order to understand and adapt to meeting community needs upon a constantly changing healthcare landscape in Victoria.

General Medicine engages with the organisation’s education, research and clinical governance programs, to promote continuous improvement of the standard of care. In particular, the department is defined by a culture of reflective learning and interdisciplinary teamwork.

About the Role

The General Medicine Advanced Trainee role is recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) as an accredited position for advanced training in the specialty area of General and Acute Care Medicine (GACM). Clinical rotations are available in a wide range of medical departments of the health service, in different settings that include hospitals and community. Specialty rotations are available in Intensive Care, Palliative Care, Haematology, Oncology, Nephrology, Respiratory, Cardiology, and Geriatrics. Beyond service delivery, the Advanced Trainee role is designed to participate in activities that contribute to the standard of the health service, such as leadership, research, teaching, quality improvement, and innovation.

At Monash Health General Medicine, the approach of the advanced training program is to tailor a 36-month end-to-end training map for those who commence their advanced training here, with a view to ensuring fulfilment of RACP requirements, and providing clinical experiences that match the trainee's interests. Those who are already part-way progressed through their GACM advanced training at other health services, are also most welcome to apply, and care will be taken to manage the outstanding RACP requirements and support transition to independent consultant physician practice.
