About Monash Doctors
To help grow your career, there are more than 1,900 Junior and 1,700 Senior Doctors at Monash Health in over 200 medical specialties. We offer unparallel opportunities in Victoria's largest & most clinically diverse teaching health service.
Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit is a 26-bed tertiary referral ICU accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for General Training (Core Intensive Care/C24). The unit also fulfils CICM requirements for subspecialty exposure in thoracic surgical intensive care and neurology/neurosurgical intensive care. MMC ICU provides a state-wide Obstetric Intensive Care referral service, a Renal and Renal–Pancreas Transplant service, and supports a comprehensive range of medical and surgical subspecialties.
The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit is a 16-bed ICU specialising in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical intensive care. VHH performs nearly 800 open-heart surgeries annually, making it one of the highest-volume cardiac surgical centres in Australia. The unit offers advanced mechanical circulatory support, including 20–30 Veno-Arterial ECMO cases per year and a newly developed Impella program. It provides care for patients with complex heart failure, rhythm disturbances, and manages over 20% of Victoria’s ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases.
Together, MMC and VHH ICUs offer a highly stimulating and supportive clinical work environment, underpinned by an active, intensivist-led education program. Educational opportunities include:
-
Weekly Registrar and Senior Registrar teaching
-
Dedicated CICM Part I and Part II examination preparation (for CICM trainees)
-
A formal, network-wide multidisciplinary simulation program
-
An established and CICM-accredited ICU Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) program, led by Monash Health intensivists and sonographer educators
-
Recognised courses, including Advanced Life Support (ALS Level 2), Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC), and internal training in ECMO and cardiac advanced life support
-
A formal mentoring program
The Monash Medical Centre Intensive Care Unit has a strong research program, with affiliations to Monash University and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS). In addition to placements at MMC Clayton and the Victorian Heart Hospital, CICM trainees may apply to undertake rotations in Anaesthesia and General Medicine during their employment with Monash Health. Selected candidates may also apply for a rotation in Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) at the adjoining Monash Children’s Hospital (MCH); please note that a separate application is required for MCH PICU Registrar positions. Senior Registrars may also have the opportunity to undertake a six-month rotation at The Alfred ICU to fulfil the trauma component of CICM training.
