About Monash Newborn
Monash Newborn provides neonatal services to support over 10,500 births a year at Monash Health across the Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton, Dandenong, Sandringham and Casey campuses, forming the largest neonatal service in Victoria. About 4,500 babies are born each year at Clayton to a selected high-risk maternity population, while lower risk mothers and their babies are cared for at Dandenong, Sandringham and Casey Hospitals.
The neonatal unit in Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton has a combined neonatal intensive care and special care capacity of 64 cots, the largest in Victoria. Supported by a comprehensive range of paediatric specialty and state-wide services at Monash Children’s Hospital, the neonatal service is able to provide the full range of medical and surgical care of the newborn, with the exception only of ECMO and cardiac surgery. The volume and breadth of the service offers outstanding opportunities for clinical training, along with training in quality improvement training, research and education, and can meet the development needs of trainees at all stages of training and career in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine. The role is accredited for the maximum 2 years with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, including perinatal and surgical care of the newborn.
About the role
The Neonatal Clinical Fellow will work in Monash Newborn, Monash Children’s Hospital, Clayton, as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide safe, high quality and timely care to babies and their families. The position is designed to provide in-depth training in the management of a wide range of perinatal and surgical clinical issues in the newborn infant in a large multi-disciplinary health service environment. The role is well-suited to doctors at all stages of Advanced Training in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (RACP) as well as other doctors with the required experience and skills and who are seeking further professional or career development opportunities. Fellows in their final year of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine training, or equivalent, are well supported with first-on call, step-up weeks and other opportunities to develop readiness for Consultant practice.
Full-time and part-time 6- or 12-month opportunities are available, commencing February or August 2027.
The role includes:

Attending high-risk births, including participating in antenatal counselling and birth planning

Managing a wide range of perinatal and neonatal surgical presentations in a well-supported and supervised multidisciplinary team environment

Undertaking advanced neonatal clinical procedures
-
Participating in outpatient clinics, including standardised neurodevelopmental assessment, and multidisciplinary long-term developmental follow-up
-
Developing expertise in family and carer communication, feedback and liaison
-
Participating in opportunities to develop readiness for Consultant practice as appropriate for level of experience and training
-
Developing confidence and skills in the effective supervision and teaching of neonatal medical officers and medical students
-
Access to a high-quality teaching and learning program, including Melbourne Neonatal Fellows Program
-
Participating in quality improvement, research and point of care ultrasound activities, with the experienced and enthusiastic support of the Consultant Neonatologist team
-
Contributing to the continuing development of Monash Newborn as a leading centre for neonatal care.
About You:

You will be keen to consolidate and progress your training and skills in the advanced care of the newborn infant and their families.

You will have the appropriate level of clinical knowledge and experience in common neonatal procedural skills in order to develop and thrive in the role of Neonatal Clinical Fellow (Senior Registrar) in a busy neonatal intensive care unit.
Mandatory requirements of the role:

A medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) which is recognised for registration by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency

At least 6 to 12 months of experience working in a neonatal intensive care at a level equivalent to a Victorian Level 6 newborn service as per the Capability frameworks for Victorian maternity and newborn services
