About Monash Children’s

Monash Children's, in conjunction with The Royal Children’s Hospital, is responsible for employment within the Victorian Basic Paediatric Training Consortium (VBPTC). The VBPTC determines recruitment eligibility and oversees training progression for all accredited basic paediatric trainees in Victoria. All trainees are recruited through the RACP level 3 training sites (RCH and MCH) according to their level of training and experience.

As a State-wide training program, trainees can be seconded to any of the Victorian training site.  Monash Children’s coordinates recruitment of the SRMO (usually BPT2) positions within the VBPTC. If applying for a JRMO or Registrar position, please see https://www.rch.org.au/jms/

The RACP BPT2 year is a 12-month training program that provides exposure to critical areas of neonatal and paediatric medicine. The position involves:

  • Six month rotation in a tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care unit (Royal Women’s Hospital/Monash Newborn/Mercy Hospital for Women)

  • Six months of other rotations comprising a mix of specialty medical units and general paediatrics (MCH, RCH, Northern, Casey, Austin, and Geelong Hospitals)

  • For rural trainees: set rotations, Monash Children’s ED, RCH specialty.

About the Role

On successful completion of this 12-month program, trainees may be considered for a further 12 months as a first year Registrar, usually including general paediatric and emergency rotations in a tertiary paediatric centre and a secondment within Melbourne. This second 12-month period is managed by The Royal Children's Hospital, following confirmation of suitability to progress by the VBPTC. For further information please refer to the position description.

Trainees Applying to Enter the VBPTC

To be eligible to apply for entry into the VBPTC at SRMO level, you must have at least 12 months of paediatric experience following your intern year.

If you’re unable to find the information you are looking for, please contact the VBPTC

Please note: External applicants who are successful in securing an SRMO position, but are not already in the RACP training program, must receive Victorian DPE approval prior to registering for the Victorian Paediatric Training Program. An SRMO position does not necessarily guarantee entry into the Victorian Paediatric Training Program.
