About the Plastic Surgery Unit
The Plastic and Reconstructive surgical unit is headed by Mr Michael Lo and provides a wide range of adult and paediatric cases. It is the busiest plastic surgery service in the state with approximately 6500 cases annually and is one of the busiest plastic surgery services in Australia. The majority of major reconstructive and acute work occurs at Dandenong Hospital. Other sites include Casey Hospital, MMC Clayton & Moorabbin and Monash Children’s Hospital.
The unit provides a full range of plastic surgery services including skin cancer, surgical oncology, major reconstructive surgery, trauma service, elective and emergency hand surgery, maxillofacial trauma and paediatric surgery.
About the Role
The Plastic Surgery Senior Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide specialized, high-quality care to patients with complex reconstructive needs (trauma, hand injury, skin cancer, burns) while gaining critical experience to apply for Unaccredited Registrar roles and further surgical training.
The Plastic Surgery Senior HMO will manage ward patients, contribute to the efficiency of the Unit, assist in surgeries and engage in academic activities including auditing and research projects
You will be accountable to Medical Head of Unit / Senior Medical Staff and Registrars for the care of all patients in the unit.
You will be required to:

Lead junior residents and liaise with the registrar body in the provision of excellent and timely care of patients

Assist in outpatient clinics

Step up as leave cover for absent registrars including supervised daytime on call

Participate in operative sessions (per resident roster)

Ensure efficiency and quality control of ward administration (e.g. discharge summaries, referrals for MDT)

Liaise with nursing and allied health for efficient collaborative care (be the ‘first port of call’)

Organise and present unit audit activities

Prepare presentations for teaching/journal club

Participate in a research or quality improvement projects under supervision of consultant Surgeons including closing audit loop/pilot studies. Initiative in identification and initiation of these will be expected.
About You:
To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:
Outline skills / experience / attitude
Interested in Plastic surgery or other surgical sub specialties
Able to recognize the importance of all roles within the unit. ( Ward, Theatre, clinic)
Team player with Can do Attitude, we are a busy unit completing 6500 procedures per year and team work with good communication skills are essential.
Mandatory requirements of the role:
Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent
All candidates will require Australian working rights
Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Employee Working with Children's Check
Current Drivers Licence
