Aboriginal Health and Engagement Program | 12-Month Fixed Term
Monash Health is seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Promotion Worker to join our Aboriginal Health Community team and help shape culturally safe, community-led approaches to health and wellbeing. This is an Aboriginal Designated Position under Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants.
About the Role
At the heart of this role is community, connection and listening to what matters.
As an Aboriginal Health Promotion Worker, you’ll work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, Elders, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and health professionals to develop and deliver health promotion initiatives that are culturally meaningful and responsive to community needs.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, you’ll help ensure programs are shaped by community voices and grounded in culture, strengths and self-determination. Your work will include:
- Planning and delivering culturally safe, community-led health promotion activities
- Supporting yarning circles, workshops, community events and engagement activities
- Building and maintaining trusted relationships with community members, Elders, ACCOs and other partners
- Listening to community priorities and helping translate these into meaningful health initiatives
- Contributing to program planning, evaluation, reporting and continuous improvement
- Working collaboratively across Monash Health to strengthen culturally safe and responsive practice

About You
You bring a strong connection to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community and understand the importance of culture, relationships, trust and community voice in supporting health and wellbeing. You may bring experience from Aboriginal health, health promotion, community development, engagement or another community-focused setting. More importantly, you’ll be someone who can connect genuinely with people, listen well and build relationships based on respect.
You’ll bring:
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and strong community connection
- Experience or knowledge relevant to Aboriginal health, health promotion, community engagement or community development
- An understanding of the cultural, social and historical factors influencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing
- Strong communication, engagement and relationship-building skills
- The ability to work respectfully with Elders, community members, ACCOs and other stakeholders
- A collaborative approach and commitment to culturally safe, strengths-based practice
- A genuine commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and improving health and wellbeing outcomes
About the Aboriginal Health and Engagement Program
The Aboriginal Health and Engagement Program works across Monash Health to strengthen culturally safe care and improve the health and wellbeing experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our approach recognises that meaningful change happens through relationships, listening and working in partnership with community.
