About the ED Mental Health & AOD Response at Monash Health (EMAAP- Emergency Mental Health, AOD, Allied, Peer Team) 

The MMC Emergency Department has an inter professional team which brings together clinicians from mental health, alcohol and other drug (AOD), Social Work and Lived Experience to provide specialised and integrated care to patients presenting to the ED with high acuity mental health and AOD issues, and complex psychosocial needs. This service is called the Mental Health and AOD Response or EMAAP and is located within the emergency department. The team will provide a seven day a week, extended hours service as well as outreach community follow up and support for a 28-day period post patient discharge. 

About The Role

This role is a full-time ongoing opportunity, based and Monash Clayton Emergency Department.

The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) role is a fantastic opportunity to join the team in the ED, enhancing the quality of care for people presenting to the Clayton Emergency Department with mental health or behavioural health issues through clinical leadership, collaboration, consultation and support of ED clinicians. Working at an advanced nursing practice level, you'll provide evidence-based, person-centred clinical leadership and expertise, and be accountable for your own clinical practice while providing support and direction to the inter-disciplinary team.

• Build strong, collaborative relationships with ED medical, nursing, mental health, addiction medicine, peer support and allied health staff, providing education and coordination to ensure effective care for patients with substance misuse issues.
• Establish supportive relationships with patients presenting with an AOD or dual diagnosis, and their families, carers and support networks.
• Conduct advanced, holistic AOD assessments — covering biopsychosocial factors, physiological indicators and collateral information from family, carers and GPs, and develop collaborative care plans and therapeutic interventions to reduce substance-related harm.
• Provide assertive outreach and a small, person-centred caseload for up to 28 days post-discharge, connecting consumers with community supports consistent with their goals.
• Develop and maintain referral pathways to counselling, outpatient clinics and community agencies to support timely discharge and ongoing care.
• Embed recovery-oriented practice, promoting choice and self-determination within medico-legal requirements and duty of care.

About You 

You are an experienced nurse who brings:

• A postgraduate qualification in AOD specific studies and current registration with AHPRA
• Advanced AOD clinical assessment skills, with experience in acute health settings and/or the emergency department
• Excellent communication skills and proven leadership qualities
• A passion for improving the experience of care for people in crisis, delivering services that respect the individual's rights, preserve their dignity, and promote recovery and inclusion
• An advocacy for Monash Health's Strategic Guiding Principles
