About Monash Anatomical Pathology

The Department of Anatomical Pathology at Monash Health is based at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton and serves a large network of hospitals including Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong, Moorabbin and Casey Hospitals. Monash Health is the largest public health care network in Victoria, providing the full range of specialist medical and surgical programs, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and perinatal / neonatal services. The Department is staffed by 12 EFT anatomical pathologists, 4 EFT registrars, and 26 EFT scientific staff.

The Department processes around 37000 biopsies each year, and this includes small endoscopic and needle core biopsies. Majority of the cases are of high complexity, comprising multiple specimens per case. Approximately 9000 cytology accessions per year - both exfoliative cytology, fluid-based cytology, and fine needle aspiration cytology are processed and reported. This includes non-gynaecological cytology cases only, as our gynaecological cytology is sent to the Victorian Cytology Service (VCS). Transbronchial needle aspirates (TBNA) and Pancreatic FNAs are performed. Around 140 perinatal autopsies and less than 10 adult autopsies are performed every year.
