About the Department / Program

The General Genetics Service comprises a professional, innovative and supportive team of Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Clinical Genetics Advanced Trainees and Genetic Administration Officers providing high quality specialty general genetics services based at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton. Development of many multidisciplinary and subspecialist genetics clinics and MDTs underpins the importance of Monash Genetics to the delivery of high quality patient care within the Monash Health LHSN.

 

  • Outpatient services at Monash Genetics are across reproductive, prenatal/fetal, paediatric and adult genetics.

  • Specialty clinics include neurogenetics, craniofacial and cleft palate, and skeletal dysplasias.

  • There are additional multidisciplinary meetings and/or clinics with other adult and paediatric specialties including: cardiogenetics, cancer genetics, renal genetics, fetal anomalies, immunogenetics, deafness genetics, haematogenetics, and genodermatoses.

  • Inpatient services across Monash Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre are primarily in paediatric genetics, particularly in the neonatal ICU.

  • Outpatient clinics are currently held across the Monash Health Clayton Campus and at Berwick Specialist Suites in Berwick.

  • There is the possibility of new clinics starting at other locations within the Monash Health LHSN.

  • Inpatient paediatric consults are currently seen at MCH and MMC Clayton but may be required at other sites upon request.

 

About the Role

Join our team as a Consultant Clinical Geneticist on a Part-time (1 day per week), Fixed Term position (up to HN36 classification) for 24 months - based at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton.

 

  • The successful applicant will work solely in the General Genetics service as part of an experienced multidisciplinary team led by the Head of Clinical Genetics.

  • The successful applicant will provide a clinical genetics consultant service primarily to outpatients but also potentially inpatients in the Monash Health Local Health Service Network (LHSN).

  • This may require travel to our outpatient clinic in Berwick or other sites within the Monash Health LHSN.

 

Roles will include:

  • Patient assessment and management

  • Be available to medical colleagues for consultation and liaison as appropriate regarding patient care.

  • Training, professional and clinical supervision of junior medical officers

  • Clinical supervision of genetic counsellors

  • Patient care coordination

  • Family member communication, feedback and liaison

  • Extensive interaction with the other health professionals

  • Self-management (including time management, accessing education and training and completing CPD requirements)

  • Support academic, research, governance, education, training & supervision (both undergraduate and postgraduate) roles in the Monash Genetics Unit, Monash Health, and in the Monash Health LHSN.

 

About You

To be successful in this healthcare role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and attributes:

  • Fellowship-qualified Clinical Geneticist with broad clinical experience across fetal, adult and child presentations of genetic conditions and multidisciplinary care

  • Advanced genomic expertise, including test selection, interpretation, and integration into clinical management

  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to explain complex genomic information clearly to patients and teams

  • Proven leadership in multidisciplinary collaboration, teaching, and supervision of trainees and staff

  • Commitment to quality improvement, research, and service development within a public healthcare setting

  • Patient-centred, ethical, and adaptable approach, with cultural sensitivity and resilience in complex clinical scenarios

 

Mandatory requirements of the role are:

  • A medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) which is recognised for registration by the Australian Medical Council

  • Fellowship of the RACP with HGSA accreditation as a Clinical Geneticist

  • Registration as a specialist Clinical Geneticist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
