About the Victorian Heart Hospital and Intensive Care
The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) is a joint initiative between Monash Health and Monash University. The VHH has innovative models of care and world class research facilities and is Australia's first dedicated Cardiac Hospital. It consists of 190 in-patient beds, an emergency department, ambulatory services, acute cardiac imaging center, operating theatres, intensive care, and cardiac catheter laboratories. The VHH cardiac surgical infrastructure has been designed to facilitate up to 1,500 cases per anum requiring cardiopulmonary bypass supported by an Intensive Care with a maximum physical capacity of 16 beds.

 

Patient case-mix at the VHH Intensive Care includes elective and emergency cardiac/aortic surgical patients and acute cardiology patients. The VHH ECMO service is managed by the Intensive Care and includes an eCPR program. The VHH Intensive Care also provides a TOE service for Intensive Care patients. The VHH Intensive Care provides an outreach service to the VHH patients and visitors. 

 

About the Role 
The VHH intensive care specialist will have significant current clinical experience in managing complex, cardiac surgical and cardiology patients. Current experience in temporary mechanical circulatory support and formal qualification in echocardiography is desirable. The successful candidate will work with the VHH ICU Director to implement and support new models of care that ensure streamlined and effective access to services, service delivery and coordinated care. This role is for a fixed term of 7 months, commencing December 29, 2025.

Key result areas

  • Promote collaboration and consistency in clinical practice, clinical governance and quality and safety across the VHH ICU and Monash Health Intensive Care Service.
  • Effectively collaborate with the VHH Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Anaesthesia and Emergency Departments.
  • Participate in the ICU Outreach service including the multi-disciplinary team response to MET calls and Code Blue activations.
  • Participate in the Monash ICU ECMO multi-disciplinary team which is based at the VHH
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team environment that includes consultants, subspecialist consultants, junior medical, nursing, allied health, and administrative support staff.
  • Provide multi-disciplinary management and clinical leadership through active involvement in patient care and promotion of adherence to Monash Health Policies and Procedures.
  • Be available to medical colleagues for consultation, expertise and liaison as appropriate regarding patient management and care.
  • Support research and academic activities including education, training and supervision opportunities (both undergraduate and postgraduate) within the Monash Health Intensive Care Service.
  • Support and enhance the VHH Intensive Care Outreach Services within Monash Health.
  • Contribute to the professional and corporate life of Monash Health by participation in appropriate committees and forums.

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine
  • Working with Children's Certificate
  • Police Check
