About Monash Children's Hospital

Monash Children’s Hospital at Monash Health is a fully integrated primary, secondary and tertiary health service to approximately a third of the state’s children. It also plays a central role in the delivery of many statewide tertiary services. It is the third largest provider of paediatric medical services in Australia.  

 

The purpose built Monash Children’s Hospital allows clinical services to be delivered in a child and family-friendly environment, and increases bed numbers and services for children and families of southeast Melbourne and Victoria.  

 

Our wards care for children with a wide range of acute and chronic medical and surgical illnesses. Monash Newborn provides care for premature babies and is the largest of the four neonatal intensive care facilities in Victoria. Monash Children’s Hospital has three campuses with all tertiary care provided at Monash Medical Centre Clayton (MMC) and secondary care at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals. The full range of medical and surgical subspecialty care is available at Clayton with emergency departments, general paediatrics and special care nurseries at all campuses.

 

The medical specialities include adolescent medicine and eating disorders, cardiology, child protection, developmental medicine, endocrinology and diabetes, gastroenterology, haematology and oncology, infectious diseases, imaging, intensive care, neonatal services including neonatal intensive care, nephrology, neurology, rehabilitation, respiratory medicine, rheumatology and sleep disorders.  The Surgical Department provides care in general surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery and urology.  For more information please visit: www.monashchildrens.org.au

About the Department of Infection and Immunity  

The Department of Infection and Immunity at the Monash Children’s Hospital provides a range of services covering infectious diseases, allergy and immunology and antimicrobial stewardship. The Infectious Diseases Department provides a consulting service to all paediatric units including the Emergency Departments, Oncology, General and Specialty Medical and Surgery units, and Monash Newborn. In addition, the ID team provides care directly for children with infections under its own bed card where appropriate.

 

The Allergy service is primarily focused on providing an ambulatory food allergy challenge service but also offers an ambulatory allergy consulting service. The Department’s other ambulatory services include a general Immunology clinic for the investigation and management of immunodeficiency, an Immunisation Safety clinic, and a general Infectious Diseases clinic. Tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections are currently included under the broader Infectious disease services in both inpatient and ambulatory settings

 

The unit comprises five Infectious Diseases Consultants, two consultants in immunology/Allergy, a visiting Tuberculosis Specialist, an AMS Paediatrician and AMS Pharmacist (fractional positions). There is a full-time accredited advanced training registrar in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and a full-time Senior Resident Medical Officer. The unit has close links with adult infectious diseases, microbiology and immunisation. The Paediatric and Adult AMS services work closely together through shared resources and governance across the medical and pharmacy departments.

 

About the Role

Join our team as a Paediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Physician, a part-time ongoing position to work at Monash Children's Hospital, Clayton. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the expansion and implementation of new Antimicrobial Stewardship Service initiatives across Monash Health.

  • Support and assist the Paediatric Infection & Immunity Department in the provision of Paediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) services

  • Provide Clinical leadership in paediatric AMS activities at Clayton, Dandenong and Casey Campuses

  • Contribute to education, research, and training in AMS at undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist levels

  • Contribute to ongoing service improvements, quality, safety and innovation to ensure Monash Health provides high quality, infectious diseases services within allocated resource to meet the needs of patients and families

  • Participate in the professional and corporate life of Monash Health by participation in appropriate committees and fora

  • Strengthen AMS initiatives across Casey, Dandenong and Clayton sites

 

About You

To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:

  • Post-specialisation experience in paediatric infectious diseases, microbiology and/or general paediatrics 

  • Experience in Antimicrobial Stewardship 

  • Proven track record in quality improvement, guideline development, stakeholder engagement and implementation science 

  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with members of interdisciplinary teams and committees to satisfy the requirements of a paediatric AMS service to optimise patient care 

 

Mandatory requirements of the role - qualifications, licences, memberships,

  • A medical degree recognised and registered with AHPRA

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian of Physicians (or equivalent) with specialist recognition as a Paediatric Consultant, including maintenance of CPD and good standing as required by AHPRA for the maintenance of specialist registration

  • A higher research degree (MD, PhD) is desirable but not mandatory
