About the role
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, this is a rare opportunity to lead the next phase of quality, safety and clinical excellence across Victoria's largest health service. As one of two Director Medical Services positions within the Chief Medical Officer portfolio, you will play a pivotal role in shaping how Monash Health delivers safer, higher quality and more person-centred care for the communities we serve.
This is far more than a traditional quality and safety leadership role. As Director Medical Services, Quality, Safety and Improvement, you will help drive the evolution of a high-performing learning health system, where clinical governance, organisational learning, innovation and continuous improvement are embedded in everyday practice.
You will provide executive leadership across a diverse and strategically important portfolio encompassing clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, medicolegal services, shared decision making, medical workforce wellbeing and the Monash Simulation Centre. Working closely with executive and clinical leaders, you will influence care at scale, strengthen safety culture, and translate insight into meaningful and sustainable improvements for patients, consumers and staff.
A distinctive feature of this role is the opportunity to lead organisation-wide initiatives that are shaping the future of healthcare, including advancing shared decision making across areas such as goals of care, end-of-life care, organ donation and voluntary assisted dying, and leveraging simulation to improve workforce capability, system design, patient safety and innovation.
If you are motivated by the opportunity to create lasting impact, influence clinical practice across a large and complex health service, and lead transformational change that improves outcomes for patients and communities, this is a career-defining leadership opportunity.
About You
You are a highly respected senior medical leader who is passionate about improving patient outcomes and creating healthcare systems that are safe, effective and continuously learning.
You bring a proven track record of leading quality, safety and clinical governance functions within large and complex healthcare environments, together with the credibility, judgement and influence required to drive change across diverse stakeholder groups.
You are as comfortable shaping strategy as you are engaging clinicians, fostering a culture of accountability and learning, and translating data and insights into measurable improvements.
To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Current registration as a medical practitioner with AHPRA and Fellowship of an appropriate medical specialist college.
- Extensive senior medical leadership experience within a large and complex health service.
- Expertise in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement and organisational change.
- Experience leading organisation-wide improvement initiatives with demonstrable outcomes.
- Strong capability in using clinical outcomes, safety and performance data to drive decision making and improvement.
- Exceptional leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A passion for innovation, organisational learning and developing cultures of excellence.
Most importantly, you will be energised by the opportunity to shape the future direction of quality, safety and clinical excellence across one of Australia's leading health services.
Mandatory requirements of the role:
- Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent and fellowship of an appropriate medical specialist college (RACMA desirable)
- Australian working rights
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Employee Working with Children's Check
- Current Drivers Licence
