Monash Health is seeking an experienced and passionate leader to join our Supportive and Palliative Care Unit as the Unit Director of Palliative Care. This is a pivotal role responsible for leading a holistic service that addresses the emotional, physical, practical, and spiritual needs of adult patients with serious illnesses, including cancer and non-malignant diseases. The unit focuses on improving the quality of life, relieving symptoms, supporting patient and family decision-making, and providing comprehensive grief support throughout the illness journey, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of unit performance, including general operations, quality and safety, financial management, strategy and planning, and media and communication.
  • Lead and support a vibrant clinical research program in collaboration with Monash University and other key partners.
  • Develop and implement high-quality palliative care services across multiple campuses, ensuring seamless patient care delivery.
  • Supervise and mentor medical staff, including consultants, registrars, and fellows.
  • Lead the development of new initiatives and change processes to expand community-based palliative care services.
  • Represent the unit in various internal and external committees, fostering key relationships with stakeholders.
  • Participate in the Palliative Medicine on-call roster, providing clinical leadership and support.
  • Ensure the unit remains aligned with Monash Health’s strategic plan, fostering academic research and clinical trials in palliative care.

Key Qualifications:

  • Medical degree with specialist qualifications in palliative medicine.
  • Significant experience in a leadership role within palliative care services.
  • Proven track record in clinical trials, service development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Strong financial and operational management skills with a focus on efficient resource allocation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, with a demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care.
  • Ability to lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team and foster partnerships with community and network services.

About the Unit: The Supportive and Palliative Care Unit is operationally based at McCulloch House and includes:

  • Outpatient services including OncoPain Clinic, Supportive Care Clinic, and the RAPID Service.
  • A Palliative Care Consultancy Service spanning multiple Monash Health campuses.
  • A research program supported by a post-doctoral fellow and research assistants.
