About the Melbourne Children's Sleep Centre
The Melbourne Children's Sleep Centre provides a consultative service and operates a 6 bed inpatient sleep centre performing 1400 sleep studies a year, with a home oximetry and ventilation service. Portable equipment is used in PICU, NICU and the wards for unstable patients. Our ventilation program includes over 100 children who are receiving non-invasive ventilatory support and several children requiring invasive ventilation. There is a strong relationship with adult sleep services, which offers a unique opportunity within Victorian Hospitals to provide tertiary clinical care across all age groups and enable smooth transition of care for complex sleep patients including those groups requiring overnight ventilation and patients with narcolepsy.
The department engages in teaching and translational research with interdisciplinary colleagues locally and nationally. Current active research areas include different methods for diagnosis of sleep disordered breathing; assessment of portable devices in paediatrics; sleep disordered breathing in special populations; cardiovascular consequences of obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea. The department has participated in NHMRC funded research since 2003 and is currently involved with a multi centre MRFF grant.
