About Monash Health General Medicine Service
The General Medicine Service at Monash Health provides acute care to inpatients across three campuses: Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong Hospital and Casey Hospital. It is the largest single medical department at Monash Health with approximately 21,000 inpatient episodes per year. Furthermore, the General Medicine Service offers a substantial volume of perioperative care in close collaboration with Surgery and Anaesthesia, and increasingly provides acute care to patients in the community setting outside hospital walls.
General Medicine forms an important training area for many doctors in their career development journey, and thus provides an active teaching program for all doctors-in-training. There is a sizeable cohort of doctors-in-training working in General Medicine at any point in time, with their growth and wellness being of great priority.
In the context of modern pressures on access to acute hospital care, it is incumbent on the General Medicine Service to continuously evolve by adapting its operations to achieve increasing quality and efficiency. This includes increased presence of consultant physicians through the duration of the day, particularly with a view to frontloading specialist acute medical assessment as early as possible after the arrival of the patient at the Emergency Department.
About the Role:
As one element of the Monash Health General Medicine evolution, the Service is seeking to establish a trial of a model of care that is the Acute Medical Assessment and Transition Unit (AMTU), designed to fast-track the passage of patients into the right care in the right place at the right time, through early senior decision making. The success of this model depends on extending the hours of clinical service that is delivered by Consultant General Medicine Physicians. Thus we are seeking consultant physician candidates who are suitable to contribute to the operations of the AMTU from now until June 2027, as well as to the operations of the broader General Medicine Service as a whole. The AMTU comprises a roster that incorporates extended hours, 7 days a week, to facilitate senior medical staff presence for acutely presenting patients through the afternoon and evening, with a view to supporting optimal flow through the hospital system.
