Genetic Counsellor/Associate GC – Monash Genetics Department (Part Time Fixed - 12 months)

Certified Genetic Counsellor/Associate to join the Monash General Genetics Department. This position is 0.2EFT (one day a week), with the possibility of some additional time depending on the classification of the successful applicant. 

  • To provide Genetic Counselling to patients and families of Monash Health and perform duty genetic counselling tasks.
  • To audit, complete data entry and work collaboratively to assess and improve the Multidisciplinary Meeting (MDM) model of care at Monash General Genetics

The General Genetics Department sees prenatal, paediatric and adult patients to provide assessment, management advice, education, counselling and support for a wide range of genetic conditions.  

We are a very busy department. We are a friendly, welcoming and supportive team. The department sees prenatal, paediatric and adult patients, for a wide range of genetic conditions. This role does not involve cancer genetics as there is a separate Familial Cancer Centre based at Monash Medical Centre.  

The role is to assist with a one year project related to Genetics Multi-disciplinary Team Meetings. 

  

A Day in the Life:  

  • Provision of prenatal, paediatric, adult and reproductive genetic counselling, in line with current standards of care.  

  • Perform “duty” to respond to incoming enquiries from patients/referring clinicians, referral triage and administration support.  

  • Document patient information such as pedigree and consultation notes in medical record. 

  • Appropriate practical and psychosocial follow up of patients, including post consultation letters. 

  • Work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team of other genetic counsellors, clinical geneticists, clinical genetics fellows, administration staff, intake assistants, students and other health care providers. Work collaboratively with the MDM project coordinator and other members of the MDM project team. 

  • Attend MDT meetings, coordinate MDT meetings, take minutes and collect data for MDT meetings. 

  • Participate in research as appropriate. 

  

About You 

You are an experienced Genetic Counsellor with a strong focus on patient centred care. Through your hard working and enthusiastic nature you have the ability to adapt to changing settings and work shifts that suit your lifestyle. You have a high level of knowledge and understanding of genetic counselling, including medical, genetic and psychosocial aspects. You have demonstrated clinical placement experience in the provision of genetic counselling. You have excellent written and verbal, English communication skills. You thrive working in a fast paced environment as part of a multidisciplinary team and are a considerate and collaborative team member. You are a proficient computer user, including excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new programs quickly. You ideally have some experience in project work or research. 

What you need:  

  • A Graduate Diploma or Masters of Genetic Counselling 

  • HGSA certified Genetic Counsellor – not mandatory 

  • Current Working with Children’s Check 

  • Proven relevant experience 

  • Relevant working visa 

  • Relevant qualifications
