Health Literacy Advisor Patient Experience Office

Clear Communication. Better Understanding. Stronger Outcomes

About the Service

The Patient Experience Office (PEO) at Monash Health champions the voices of patients, families, carers and communities to ensure care is person-centred, compassionate and responsive to individual needs. Through consumer partnerships, co-design initiatives, feedback programs and patient information resources, the team helps shape and improve healthcare services across the organisation.

The PEO works closely with consumers and staff to translate lived experiences into meaningful improvements in care delivery, communication and health outcomes. By promoting inclusive practices, strengthening consumer engagement and supporting continuous improvement, the team helps build trust and enhance the patient experience across Monash Health.

We’re now looking for a passionate Health Literacy Advisor on a part-time basis (0.9 EFT) to join our Patient Experience Office on a fixed-term arrangement, covering a period of long service leave.

This position has been established to support continuity of our health literacy and communication work during this time, and while it is fixed-term in nature, there may be future opportunity for the role to continue beyond the term, subject to organisational requirements and approval.

About the role

As our Health Literacy Advisor, you will be the expert who ensures every patient and family receives information they can truly understand — regardless of background, literacy level, or cultural needs. You’ll lead the implementation of our Health Literacy Framework, develop and refine high-quality patient resources, and build the capability of thousands of staff to communicate with compassion and clarity.

This is a highly influential specialist role where you’ll blend strategic thinking, content expertise, and education to drive measurable improvements in patient understanding, engagement, and experience.

Key responsibilities

      • Lead organisation-wide health literacy initiatives and embed best-practice principles into everyday practice.
      • Develop, review, and maintain accessible patient information materials (written, digital, and audiovisual) using plain language and inclusive design.
      • Oversee document control, approval processes, and governance of all patient resources.
      • Deliver education, coaching, and training to clinical and non-clinical teams to strengthen workforce capability.
      • Partner with consumers, patients, and staff to co-design better communication and services.
      • Maintain and enhance our Patient Information intranet and external resource pages.
      • Collect and use powerful patient, carer, and staff stories (including the Monash Voices library) to drive improvement.
      • Contribute to broader patient experience priorities and data-driven quality initiatives.

About you

You are a passionate and skilled health literacy professional with a genuine commitment to equity and clear communication. You excel at translating complex medical information into plain, engaging, and accessible content that genuinely helps patients and families understand and engage with their care.

You bring strong stakeholder engagement skills and thrive in a collaborative environment, working effectively with clinical teams, consumers, and diverse communities. With a detail-oriented approach and excellent project management abilities, you are motivated by creating meaningful improvements in patient experience and health outcomes.

In addition to this, you will also have

      • Relevant tertiary qualification in Health Promotion, Public Health, Communications, Health Sciences, or a related field.
      • Demonstrated experience applying health literacy principles in a healthcare or similar setting.
      • Exceptional written communication skills with proven ability to produce plain-language, accessible content.
      • Strong project management, stakeholder engagement, and facilitation skills.
      • Experience in education/coaching and building capability in others.
      • High level of digital literacy and attention to detail.

Highly regarded

      • Formal training or certification in health literacy or plain language.
      • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
      • Experience in co-design, consumer engagement, or quality improvement.
      • Knowledge of accessibility standards and cultural safety practices.

Why join Monash Health?

At Monash Health we embrace diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can contribute their best.

      • Work for an organisation that truly values patient voices and is committed to equitable, person-centred care.
      • Be part of a supportive, innovative Patient Experience team that is making tangible improvements every day.
      • Access to professional development, including health literacy and co-design opportunities.
      • Generous salary packaging, employee benefits, and work-life balance options.
