Lead Software Engineer
Build the Digital Foundations for Better Care
This is an opportunity for an experienced software engineer to help build LaunchPad, Monash Health’s development platform for addressing real clinical and operational challenges using modern technologies and AI.
Working in a small, innovative and driven team, you will contribute to foundational infrastructure and deliver production-grade applications and services that support frontline staff and patients. You will work across frontend and backend development, collaborate closely with a Product Manager and provide technical leadership from prototype through to production.

About the Role
We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join our Innovation, Platforms and Partnerships team within the Digital and Information Division.
You will combine strong hands-on engineering capability with the judgement to translate product requirements from frontline staff, communicate technical trade-offs and establish the standards needed to deliver secure, reliable and maintainable digital products.
You will also:
-
work closely with the delivery team to implement foundational infrastructure, including modern data platforms, API management and an AI platform
-
own technical delivery from prototype through to production
-
design and implement high-quality user interfaces supported by a robust component library and design system
-
work with other engineers to create reliable workflows and APIs
-
establish application-level continuous integration, continuous delivery and automated testing practices
-
establish and model engineering standards across code review, testing, documentation and secure development
-
design and build applications in line with clinical safety, privacy and information security requirements
-
work with Clinical Governance and Cyber Security teams to assess and mitigate risk
-
engage directly with end users to develop solutions that are practical, valuable and adopted in practice.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a collaborative and technically accomplished engineer who can move confidently between hands-on delivery, product conversations and technical leadership. You will be comfortable working in an evolving environment, making pragmatic trade-offs and helping a small team build strong engineering foundations.
You will bring:
-
demonstrated experience building and deploying production software systems and applications across frontend, backend and API development
-
extensive experience with TypeScript and React/Next.js
-
demonstrated experience building application-level CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
-
strong proficiency with cloud platforms, with Azure experience preferred
-
strong knowledge of secure development practices and authentication and authorisation, including OAuth/OIDC and Microsoft Entra ID
-
a track record of working directly with end users to deliver digital solutions that are adopted in practice
-
the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders and provide technical leadership within a team.
Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, and/or significant relevant industry experience, are required.
The following experience will be highly regarded:
-
practical use of AI-assisted development tools, with sound judgement in reviewing AI-generated code
-
building large language model powered applications, including retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation and guardrails
-
familiarity with clinical terminology systems such as SNOMED CT-AU and standards such as FHIR
-
working in health, regulated or security-sensitive environments
-
Python development.
