About the Role

Within the Diagnostic Genomics laboratory, the successful candidate will be placed in the Genetics and Molecular Pathology laboratory but may also be rotated across other areas such as the Cytogenetics laboratory and the Thalassaemia and Haemophilia Molecular Reference laboratory.

The Genetics and Molecular Pathology laboratory provides a specialised genetic testing service for both malignant conditions and cancer predisposition disorders. Our genomics team currently offers DNA and RNA next generation sequencing (NGS) for targeted panels in solid tumour biology, molecular haematology and cardiac.

The Cytogenetics Laboratory processes a range of prenatal and postnatal specimens, using conventional and molecular diagnostic techniques. This includes DNA extraction, tissue culture, FISH, Microarray and Karyotyping.

The Thalassaemia and Haemophilia Molecular laboratory’s role is to confirm the genetic basis for thalassaemia and other significant haemoglobinopathies, identify carrier status and perform prenatal testing for couples at risk of giving birth to children with severe disease. This laboratory also performs proband and carrier testing for Haemophilia A and Haemophilia B as well as prenatal testing.

The Medical Laboratory Technician Grade 2 will be expected to perform DNA and RNA extractions from a variety of sample types as well as diagnostic genetic tests as directed in accordance with set methods which includes BCR-ABL testing and microtomy. Other tasks include performing ongoing maintenance of equipment and providing supportive laboratory operations in the diagnostic genomics specimen reception by receiving patient samples, sending out extracted DNA to referral laboratories, monitoring/answering generic emails and other administrative tasks.
