About Us
You will be joining Monash Health at an exciting time as we work in partnership with Alfred Health to be the premier shared public pathology service in Victoria. As a member of the pathology team you will be helping shape the direction of the partnership.
Monash Health Pathology is an integral part of Monash Health. It is the largest public provider of Pathology services in the state and currently operates 6 laboratories. The largest of these is located at the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, with additional laboratories located at the Dandenong, Moorabbin, Casey, Victorian Heart Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospitals. There are currently 22 collection locations based within the hospital sites and community settings. Services are provided to the Public and Private sectors, and other laboratory services.
About the Role:

We are seeking highly motivated, experienced, and dedicated Medical Scientists to fill a permanent job‑share midnight shift position (1.0 EFT) within the Core Laboratory at the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH)

The successful applicants will possess demonstrated experience in Haematology, Chemical Pathology, and Transfusion, with Morphology training highly desirable

You will join the existing team of Medical Scientists and Laboratory Technicians at VHH and report directly to the Pathology Site Manager

Following completion of training, the role will involve working solo midnight shifts, requiring a high level of autonomy, technical expertise, and sound decision‑making. A mandatory day shift once per month is required to maintain competency and engagement with the broader laboratory team

Specimen reception staff coverage is available during midnight shifts to support workflow

This role is intended for experienced Scientists looking for a stable, long term role, for whom permanent midnight shift work aligns with their lifestyle. It requires confidence, independence, and a high level of technical competence

This role offers an excellent opportunity for experienced Medical Scientists seeking advanced responsibility within a specialist laboratory environment
Key Responsibilities:

Performs all the duties of a Grade I Medical Scientist, carries out tests, investigations and troubleshooting of a complex nature

Apply sound scientific judgement to resolve technical issues and ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with laboratory standards

Communicate effectively through clear, concise verbal and written reporting to support clinical decision-making

Work independently with confidence and efficiency while maintaining high standards of safety and quality
-
Demonstrate strong multitasking abilities, effectively managing competing priorities in a fast‑paced laboratory environment
About You
Experience & Requirements:
-
A minimum of 5 years experience in a core laboratory is essential
-
Core laboratory training including Haematology, Chemical Pathology and Transfusion is essential
-
The laboratory operates 24/7, with midnight shift hours being 22:30-07:00

The mandatory day shift start times can be:

06:30–15:00
-
08:00–16:30
-
09:30–18:00
-

This is an ongoing vacancy

Attention to detail with good interpretation skills in reviewing internal and external QC, troubleshooting and good verbal and written communication is required
Instrumentation
Experience with the following analysers is highly desirable:
- Beckman Coulter DxC700 AU
- Beckman Coulter DxH690
- Beckman Coulter Access 2
- Radiometer ABL90
- Werfen ACL TOP 350
- Ortho Swift
What you need to know
The successful applicant will have a Degree in Laboratory Medicine, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or recognised equivalent with experience in a multi-disciplinary laboratory. Evidence of ongoing commitment to Professional development is highly desirable.
