About the Team

The Monash Children’s Child Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit provides specialist assessment and care planning for children aged up to 12 years, with neurodevelopmental disorders (such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Disability) and/or who show severe or complex psychiatric, behavioural and developmental symptoms that indicate need for a short term inpatient service. A range of consultation services, brief emergency admissions, and planned assessment admissions are provided.

About the Role

The Child Neuropsychiatry Senior Clinician works in collaboration with the child and family, community based service providers and the inpatient team to triage referrals, plan and coordinate the admission and the expected outcomes. The Senior Clinician has a key role in identifying the referral question and goals for the admission, to ensure the required services will be available to meet the specified goals, and to ensure treatment is relevant to the family’s unique needs and capabilities. In conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team, the Senior Clinician will organise the joint formulation, feedback and plain language report to the child and family. The Senior Clinician role includes liaison with, and coordination of specialist consultation and education to families, schools, CYMHS and community based services to support the discharge of the child and family and the maintenance of the progress made during the admission. The Senior Clinician will facilitate the coordination of research and evaluation initiatives.

The key components of the Senior Clinician role within the Child Neuropsychiatry team include:

  • The triage of referrals, planning and coordinating the admission in collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager and Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Scheduling and coordinating assessments required with the family and referrer to verify the goals of admission and expected outcomes (including ensuring community based assessments are completed prior to admission and that required services will be available during the child’s inpatient stay, for example, genetic testing; dietetics consultation)
  • Supporting the child and family to understand and manage the admission including liaising with social work to ensure family supports (for example, accommodation for rural families) are available
  • A key role in collaborating with family to ensure goals of the admission are met, collaborative treatment planning and decision making is implemented and that treatment reflects the family’s needs and organisation
