About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Public Health Officer (PHO) to join the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC) team within the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU). This leadership role is central to protecting the health of our community through the management of individual cases and outbreaks of communicable diseases under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008.
As a Senior PHO, you will support and coordinate a team of Public Health Officers, acting as the first point of escalation for public health issues and ensuring high-quality, evidence based responses across our catchment. You will work closely with the Team Leader, epidemiologists, clinicians and key partners to deliver effective public health action, strengthen systems, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our service.
In this role, you will:

Oversee and support the end-to-end management of communicable disease case and outbreaks

Provide expert public health advice to team members, clinicians, service providers and community stakeholders

Lead quality improvement, innovation and research activities within the public health program

Support staff development, training and reflective practice

Help shape public health processes, workflows and resources to meet current and emerging needs
About You
You are an experienced public health professional with a strong expertise in communicable disease management and a commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based public health action. You are confident leading others, supporting decision-making and navigating complex or time-sensitive situations with professionalism and sound judgement.
You bring:

A relevant tertiary qualification in public health or an equivalent field

Eligibility to be an Authorised Officer under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008

At least 7 years experience in communicable disease control, case and outbreak management or health protection

Strgon leadership capability with experience supporting staff, coaching others and managing workloads

Highly developed communication skills with the ability to provide clear advice to colleagues, clinicians and community members

Excellent organisational and analytical skills, with confidence prioritising in fast-paced environments

Sensitivity to cultural, ethical and social complexity and the ability to apply this practice
