About the Role
Join our team as a Grade 2 Social Worker in a full‑time, ongoing position supporting neonatal intensive care (NICU) and special care nursery (SCN) caseloads at Monash Children’s Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to work within one of Australia’s leading paediatric services and contribute to the care of some of our most vulnerable patients and their families.
You will become an integral member of the Monash Children’s Allied Health team, working within a supportive, highly skilled, and collaborative professional environment.

About Us
Social Workers at Monash Children’s Hospital are an integral part of the broader Monash Children’s Allied Health Team, delivering specialised services to infant, paediatric and adolescent patients and their families. Social work services are provided in inpatient settings including Paediatric ICU, Children’s Cancer Centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; in ambulatory care services such as the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes and we work closely with state-wide services such as the Victorian Paediatric Palliative Care Program and the Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service.
Monash Children’s Hospital operates one of the state’s largest NICU and SCN units, offering a dynamic, supportive and highly specialised environment.
In this inpatient role, you will provide compassionate supportive care and psychosocial support to families, working in partnership with them to promote the best possible health outcomes for newborns and their caregivers. Comprehensive risk assessment is a core component of the role, ensuring that vulnerabilities are identified early and addressed through timely, coordinated intervention. Holistic practice and a strong systems approach underpin the work, with an emphasis on collaboration across multiple clinical teams and community agencies. Your ability to build relationships, advocate effectively, and navigate complex social situations will be central to success in this fast‑paced setting. Strong organisational skills are essential to ensure timely, coordinated and family‑centred care.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge:

A dynamic, flexible, and collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary and allied health teams.

Strong knowledge of community resources, relevant assessment and intervention frameworks, and a strong understanding of the Children, Youth and Families Act.

Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments, apply effective problem-solving strategies,
-
Clear compassionate and professional communication skills, with confidence in coordinating discharge planning in a complex hospital environment.

Experience supporting families through acute and chronic illness, with insight into the psychosocial impacts on infants, children, and their families.

A well‑developed understanding of paediatric end‑of‑life care, including the ability to provide sensitive grief and bereavement support.

Willingness to participate in the Social Work after‑hours on‑call service across hospital sites, with training and support provided.
Qualification & licence requirements include:
- Minimum 2 years clinical social work experience
- Bachelor of Social Work or Masters Social Work Qualifying OR Master of Social Work, OR equivalent as assessed and approved by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
- Eligible for ordinary membership of AASW (http://www.aasw.asn.au/)
- Experience in an acute health care setting and/or with children and families and/or with Child Protection
