About Dandenong ICU

Dandenong ICU is a large metropolitan general intensive care unit located in the Southeast of Melbourne.  It is known for its acute casemix and outstanding working culture.

    14 physical beds
    10 ICU Equivalent
  •  Staff
    8 FCICM, totalling 5.5 FTE
    12 Registrars, with mix of CICM trainees, ED rotators and Anaesthetics Rotators
     4 Critical Care Senior HMO
  •  Casemix
    20% elective (Colorectal, General Surgery, ENT, Plastics, Orthopaedics etc.)

40% emergency (Sepsis, toxicology, GI bleeds, liver failure, cardiac arrests etc)
40% Ward referrals / METs
Around 200 MET calls a month

 

About the Role   
Up to 2 Transition Year (TY) Trainee positions will be offered at the Dandenong Hospital ICU, aimed to fulfill the training requirements of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).  It is a 12-month training post that bridges the gap between a supervised registrar and independent consultant practice in intensive care.  Trainees manage critically ill patients, supervise junior medical staff, engage in clinical support activities, and develop the autonomy and communication skills required for a consultant intensivist role.   Potential clinical support activities include research, education, safety and quality, ultrasound/echocardiography, recruitment, digital health, college related projects and global health.

 

About You
To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:  

•    Clinical Expertise
       Ability to define and manage complex clinical problems in critically ill patients. 
•    Communication: 
       Effective communication skills, empathy, and trust with patients and their families. 
•    Autonomy
     Demonstrate clinical autonomy under the guidance of supervising intensivists, with the
      level of autonomy adjusting based on the trainee's capabilities. 

 

Mandatory requirements of the role:

- Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent   
- All candidates will require Australian working rights 
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)  
- Employee Working with Children's Check  
- Current Drivers Licence 
- Fellowship of College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM)
