About Infant, Child, Family and Youth Mental Health

Infant, Child, Family and Youth Mental Health provides a range of mental health services to infants, children, adolescents, youth and their families within the Southern Region.

The organisational and clinical model has been developed to provide mental health care that is flexible and responsive to the individual and developmental needs of the infant to youth populations and their families.  As such, this model will support the provision of integrated mental health care for young people, guided by consistent, service-wide protocols and principles of care.

About Unit 2  

The Dandenong Unit 2 Inpatient Psychiatric Unit is a 25 bed unit that provides specialist mental health care for persons experiencing severe and/or complex mental health needs that cannot be managed in the community and requires intensive inpatient treatment. 

About the Role

The Unit 2 ANM supports the Nurse Manager in leading a dynamic youth mental health inpatient unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and Recovery-focused care.  Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, the role provides clinical leadership, staff support, patient flow coordination, and operational oversight while fostering a positive therapeutic environment for young people and their families.  The ANM plays a key role in promoting best practice mentoring staff and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the Unit 2 space.

About You

We are seeking an experienced clinical leader who demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills, sound clinical judgement, and the ability to build positive relationships with consumers, families, and multidisciplinary teams. You will be adaptable, resilient, and committed to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice, with a genuine interest in mentoring others, driving quality improvement, and contributing to a positive team culture. Previous leadership experience in a youth or mental health setting will be highly regarded.

Minimum Requirements

• Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration.
• Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing.
• Demonstrated leadership experience within an acute mental health inpatient unit.
• Significant clinical experience in mental health nursing, with experience working with young people highly desirable.
• Proven ability to lead, support, and develop nursing staff within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Strong knowledge of recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and person-centred care practices.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate patient flow and manage clinical and operational priorities.
• Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement, and maintaining high standards of patient care.
• Sound understanding of relevant mental health legislation, policies, and professional nursing standards.
• Well-developed decision-making and risk assessment skills in a complex clinical environment.
• Current Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain) and any other mandatory organisational requirements.
