About the Role
Family/Carer Consultants provide specialist family/carer lived experience perspective into the Mental Health Program service planning, service delivery and evaluation. Family/Carer Consultants work alongside clinicians and service leads to maximise family/carer engagement and participation in treatment through improved service design, policy development, staff training, and in response to family/carer experience outcomes. Family/Carer Consultants also contribute their knowledge and experience to effect systemic policy change within the Mental Health Program.
The position is based in Dandenong and is required to work across other sites.
About You
As a designated Family/carer lived or living experience role, you will have a declared personal experience of supporting someone living with mental illness, and experience of the mental health system.
You possess a deep understanding of mental health challenges through your own lived experience as a family/carer and are passionate about supporting others. You have a genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals with mental health difficulties and their careers. With a strong focus on inclusion, diversity, and person-centred care, you bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills to your work. Your enthusiasm, compassion, and ability to collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders. You are driven to pursue a meaningful and purposeful career, with a desire to grow as a lived experience health professional. As an experienced lived experience worker, you are dedicated to contributing to system change in mental health services.
What You Need
As a Family/carer Consultant you will demonstrate the following key skills, experience and knowledge (see attached Position Description for a complete list of requirements):

Lived experience as a family member or carer of someone who has accessed mental health services

Understanding of the public mental health system
-
Experience (e.g. at least 12 months) in a family/carer lived experience role (e.g. peer worker, consultant, or equivalent)

Ability to articulate and share your own lived experience with intent and purpose

Ability to work with family members, carers and health professionals to contribute to and advance systemic policy change within the mental health system
-
Advanced verbal and written communication skills to support improved service planning, service delivery and evaluation
-
An understanding of the diversity of the cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds of our community, and the impact this has on consumers mental state and experience of mental health services

Up to date knowledge of the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act 2022, the Carer Recognition Act 2012, and relevant Chief Psychiatrist Guidelines

Knowledge of recovery oriented practice, family and carer inclusive practice, and supported decision making
