An exciting opportunity exists to be part of the new Mental Health and Wellbeing Local (MHWL) being rolled out across Victoria as part of the ongoing reforms following the Victorian Royal Commission into Mental Health. The Cardinia MHWL will be a key component of Victoria’s reformed mental health and wellbeing system, with Monash Health playing a key role as part of the partnership consortium.
The MHWL will offer a range of mental health and community-based services aimed at supporting some of the most vulnerable members of the community in the Southeast of Melbourne.
We are seeking a Dual Diagnosis Clinician to join the Cardinia MHWL team on a full-time basis.
About the Role
Improve outcomes for individuals experiencing co‑occurring mental health and substance use concerns by providing specialist assessments and interventions for co‑occurring disorders. This includes AOD comprehensive assessments, secondary consultation, and brief therapeutic interventions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting bio‑psycho‑social assessments
- Undertaking clinical mental state and risk assessments
- Providing secondary consultation to colleagues, including peer practitioners and community mental health practitioners
- Facilitating escalation of care when required (e.g. PTS, ICT, CCT)
- Delivering complex clinical care and brief therapeutic interventions (e.g. psychoeducation, coping strategies, single‑session family work)
- Supporting the multidisciplinary team to enhance capability in recognising and responding to co‑existing mental health and substance use issues
- Collaborating with the Clinical Manager to develop nursing practices and training
- Participating in cyclical clinical reviews and maintaining accurate, timely documentation
- Working in community settings and via telehealth
- Working collaboratively with consortium partners, clinicians, consumers, and families/carers
The Dual Diagnosis Clinician contributes to comprehensive assessment, coordinated treatment planning, and appropriate referral pathways for consumers presenting to the service.
This is a unique opportunity to positively influence mental health outcomes through collaborative care planning and integrated service delivery.
In this role you will

- Deliver high-quality nursing services and support junior staff
- Ensure compliance with OH&S and lived experience governance frameworks
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, consumers, carers, and community members
- Promote inclusive care aligned with “no wrong door” and service-as-needed principles
- Participate in education, peer review, and quality improvement initiatives
About You
You are a compassionate and skilled clinician with:
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
- Experience in complex mental health assessments and interventions
- A collaborative approach to working with diverse stakeholders
- A commitment to continuous learning and service improvement
You will also have
- Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and consent to ongoing registration checks via Monash Health’s electronic credentialing systems
- Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing – or completion of a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program, or specialist post basic course of training leading to registration as a Division 3 nurse
- Minimum of 3 years post qualification experience following completion of a mental health nursing qualification
- Demonstrated experience in providing AOD comprehensive assessments and brief interventions
- Demonstrated experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use
(dual diagnosis) presentations - Strong knowledge of the Alcohol and Other Drug service system, referral pathways, and integrated
treatment approaches - Certificate IV in AOD, or equivalent qualification (desirable), or relevant further education
