Join our team as a Family/Carer Peer Worker, Level 4, on a part time (0.6 EFT) ongoing basis. This position will work in our community Adult Mental Health Service based in the Dandenong HOPE Team in Narre Warren.
About the Role
As integral members of our multidisciplinary teams, Peer Workers bring their lived and living experience to support others through the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) model. This approach emphasizes authentic connection, respect for diverse perspectives, mutuality, and shared experiences to foster growth, collaboration, and hope for recovery.
Consumer Peer Workers offer individual and group support, empowering individuals to engage actively in their treatment and recovery journey. Family/Carer Peer Workers assist carers and family members, providing guidance in their supportive roles and helping them contribute to the treatment and recovery planning for the person they are caring for.
As a Grade 4 Family/Carer Peer Worker with the Dandenong HOPE Team, you will:
- Provide one-to-one peer support to family members and carers, drawing purposefully on your own lived and/or living experience
- Support families and carers to navigate the mental health system, strengthen self-advocacy and have their perspectives included in treatment and recovery planning
- Work alongside the multidisciplinary team to champion family-inclusive practice and contribute the family/carer lived experience perspective
- Provide discipline-specific reflective supervision, mentoring and guidance to other Family/Carer Peer Workers
- Support Peer Workers to navigate complex family/carer needs and strengthen peer work practice
- Contribute to the development and delivery of family/carer peer-led groups

The Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) initiative provides psychosocial support for people who are identified as being at significant risk of suicide, following a suicide attempt or serious suicidal ideation. The initiative aims to provide follow-up care and support for people and their families/carers, who traditionally would not have received such intervention immediately after hospital discharge.
About you
As a designated Family/Carer lived experience role, you bring your own lived and/or living experience of caring for a family member through mental ill health and recovery, along with experience accessing support from mental health services.
You have a minimum of two years' experience working in a designated lived experience role and have completed Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training. Working towards a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or a similar qualification is desirable.
Ready to step into a Grade 4 role, you bring an advanced understanding of family/carer lived experience and peer support practice. You are confident working autonomously, supporting complex family/carer needs and providing reflective supervision, mentoring and guidance to other Peer Workers.
