About the Role
An exciting new opportunity exists to join our Dandenong Continuing Care team (DCCT) as a Lived Experience - Consumer Peer Support Worker. This is a full time ongoing opportunity and will see you working from our Community Mental Health Service, based in Dandenong.
In this unique and valued role, you will draw on your own lived experience of mental ill health and recovery to provide meaningful support to others on their recovery journey.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will offer one-on-one peer support, co-facilitate groups, and help consumers navigate mental health services. Using the principles of Intentional Peer Support (IPS), you will build authentic connections that promote hope, empowerment, and self-advocacy.
This is a non-clinical role that compliments clinical care and champions the voice and choice of consumers. You’ll also contribute to peer workforce development through supervision, mentoring, and reflective practice.
About our Lived & Living Experience Workforce
Monash Health is one of the largest Lived and Living Experience Workforce employers in Victoria, encompassing both Consultants and Peer Workers. Our Peer Workforce, which includes both Consumer and Family/Carer Peer Workers, is integral to several of our inpatient units, community teams, emergency departments, and drug and alcohol services.
Dandenong Community Mental Health Team provides an effective and comprehensive service to the Monash Adult Mental Health Program. Working within a multi-disciplinary team we provide treatment and support to individuals experiencing complex mental health problems. We strive to deliver high quality recovery-focused client care. Our aim is to promote self-efficacy and independence, and social inclusion with all the individuals we support.
About you
You possess a deep understanding of mental health challenges through your own lived experience as a consumer and are passionate about supporting others. You have a genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals with mental health difficulties and their carers.
With a strong focus on inclusion, diversity, and person-centred care, you bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills to your work. Your enthusiasm, compassion, and ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team set you apart.
- Declared personal experience of living with mental illness, including experience as a mental health service user.
- Ability to use your own lived experience to inspire hope in belief and recovery.
- Knowledge of peer work principles and the ability to support others from a mutual perspective.
- Completion of Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training.
- Completion of, or working towards, Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or similar qualification.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a peer worker or equivalent role is desirable.
