About the Department / Program
The Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) is a 50 bed unit based at Dandenong Hospital that provides medium to long-term inpatient treatment and rehabilitation for people who have continuous and severe symptoms of mental illness. Monash Health SECU accepts people from the catchment areas of; Eastern Health, Peninsula Health, Monash Health and Alfred Health. Our collaborative multi-disciplinary team is made up of; Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Clinical and Neuro Psychologists, Exercise Physiologist, Dietician, Music Therapist, Psychiatrists and Mental Health Nurses. The multi-disciplinary team provide treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation programs optimising individual function, for return to community living. NDIS plays an integral part in providing psychosocial support and care for our consumers and families during their stay supporting community transition.
About the Role
The position provides psychological services to consumers in the Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU). SECU is a 50 bed sub-acute adult psychiatric inpatient unit, based at Dandenong Hospital. The multi-disciplinary SECU team (MDT) provides medium to long-term inpatient treatment and rehabilitation to consumers who have unremitting and severe symptoms of mental illness or disorder, who are unable to be effectively treated in a less restrictive setting and are unable to live independently.
The focus of the position is to provide evidence-based psychological services to consumers of SECU who present with conditions including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and co-morbid substance use disorders, cognitive impairment and/or behaviours of concern.
About You
You thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment and are confident in your ability to conduct comprehensive assessments, provide evidence-based interventions, and contribute to collaborative treatment and discharge planning. You have strong working knowledge of community-based systems and are passionate about building effective partnerships that support seamless transitions from inpatient care to the community.
Your clinical skills are matched by your interpersonal strengths—you are an excellent communicator, team player, and advocate for consumers and their families. You are capable of managing a varied caseload, providing crisis intervention when needed, and supporting consumers experiencing complex psychological challenges.
In addition to your clinical responsibilities, you take pride in contributing to the growth of others—offering supervision to students and junior staff, and engaging in ongoing professional development to support best practice care.
