Head of Environmental Sustainability

Help Shape the Future of Sustainable Healthcare

At Monash Health, we believe the future of healthcare depends on more than clinical excellence alone. It depends on innovation, responsible stewardship and creating healthier futures for both people and planet.

As Victoria’s largest public health service, Monash Health is delivering on an ambitious vision through our Strategy 2026–2031: Care, reimagined. Environmental responsibility has been identified as one of the organisation’s core capabilities underpinning the future of healthcare delivery.

We are now seeking an exceptional leader to drive this agenda forward through the newly created role of Head of Environmental Sustainability.

This is a rare opportunity to shape and lead environmental sustainability strategy across one of Australia’s most complex and influential healthcare organisations.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, the Head of Environmental Sustainability will lead the implementation of Monash Health’s Environmental Sustainability Plan — enabling a healthier planet for future generations.

This is a hands-on strategic leadership role responsible not only for shaping sustainability direction, but for actively driving delivery across operations, infrastructure, procurement, governance and organisational culture. The successful incumbent will be expected to work closely with teams across the organisation to roll up their sleeves and ensure sustainability initiatives are implemented in practice, not just designed in theory.

A key focus of the role is translating sustainability strategy into tangible, operational outcomes—leading the end-to-end implementation of initiatives that deliver measurable environmental impact, organisational improvement and cost efficiencies across the health service. This includes building capability, embedding new ways of working, and ensuring accountability through a strong enterprise-wide sustainability reporting function.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in helping Monash Health achieve its long-term ambition of being recognised as a leader in environmentally sustainable healthcare.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Leading implementation of Monash Health’s Environmental Sustainability Plan
  • Establishing and overseeing enterprise sustainability reporting frameworks and performance metrics
  • Developing meaningful ESG, emissions and environmental reporting capability
  • Driving sustainable operational practices across a large and complex healthcare environment
  • Identifying initiatives that reduce environmental impact while improving operational efficiency and reducing cost
  • Leading sustainability governance, compliance and accountability processes
  • Embedding sustainability into infrastructure, procurement and operational decision-making
  • Partnering with executive, clinical and operational leaders to influence organisation-wide change
  • Building sustainability capability and engagement across the organisation

A Role With Real Impact

This role sits at the intersection of:

  • Strategy
  • Implementation
  • Reporting & governance
  • Operational transformation
  • Environmental responsibility

You’ll work closely with executive leaders, operational stakeholders, government bodies and external partners to deliver measurable sustainability outcomes at scale.

Importantly, this is not simply a technical sustainability role. It is a leadership role focused on implementing strategy, influencing organisational change and building sustainable systems and reporting capability across a highly complex environment.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking a pragmatic and delivery-focused sustainability leader who can translate ambitious organisational goals into measurable, on-the-ground outcomes—balancing strategic influence with a strong capability for implementation and execution across the organisation.

You may currently work in:

  • Sustainability or ESG leadership
  • Environmental management
  • Governance and reporting
  • Strategy implementation or transformation
  • Healthcare or government

We are open to candidates from adjacent sectors where strong transferable leadership capability exists

The successful candidate will bring:

  • Experience implementing large-scale sustainability or transformation initiatives
  • Strong reporting, governance and analytical capability
  • Ability to establish meaningful sustainability metrics, reporting frameworks and accountability measures
  • Financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to identify operational efficiencies and sustainable cost-saving opportunities
  • Strong executive stakeholder engagement capability
  • Strategic and systems thinking
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills
  • A collaborative and values-driven leadership style

Experience within healthcare is advantageous but not essential.
